How to stop mold in a closet with poor air circulation?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots forming in the corners of our master bedroom closet, especially on the outer wall. I'm worried it's mold starting to grow from the humidity. Our apartment is in an older building in Bur Dubai and we run the AC constantly, but the closet seems to be a dead zone for air circulation.
What's the best way to stop this from getting worse, and is a dehumidifier or something like DampRid my best bet for a small enclosed space like this?

Based on the symptoms you're describing – black spots in the corners of a closet on an outer wall in an older Bur Dubai building – you are almost certainly dealing with the initial stages of mold growth. This is a very common issue here due to our extreme humidity, and closets are prime targets because of stagnant air.
First, immediately move any clothing or stored items away from the affected area to prevent cross-contamination. For a small, enclosed space like a closet, a desiccant like DampRid can provide a temporary, short-term reduction in moisture. However, it's not a solution. It just treats the symptom inside the closet, not the root cause. The core issue is likely a combination of the temperature differential between the cold outer wall and the humid air, creating condensation (a thermal bridge), and the lack of air circulation. Constantly running the AC helps, but it can't reach sealed-off areas. Your best immediate action is to improve airflow. Leave the closet doors open as much as possible and consider installing a small battery-operated fan inside to keep the air moving. This disrupts the stagnant, humid microenvironment mold needs to grow. For a permanent fix, the wall itself needs to be investigated. In older buildings, insufficient insulation can lead to persistent condensation. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We need to assess if this is a surface issue or if there's a hidden problem within the wall cavity itself. The UAE's regulatory standards for indoor air quality (UAE.S 5010:2021) emphasize identifying and eliminating moisture sources to prevent health hazards. If the growth is more than just a few small spots, please do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize spores. We can conduct moisture mapping and thermal imaging to find the exact source. |
