AC making loud rattling noise - DIY fix or call technician?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my villa's main living area has started making a really loud rattling noise whenever it kicks on, especially in the evenings when it's working hardest. It’s been doing this for about three days now and it’s driving us crazy trying to watch TV. I just checked the filter and it’s clean, so that’s not it. Is this likely a problem with the fan motor or something come loose inside the unit, and is it an easy fix I can try myself or do I definitely need to call a technician?

Based on your description, that loud rattling noise in your villa's AC unit is a classic symptom and not something to ignore, especially here in Dubai where the system is under constant strain. With a clean filter ruled out, the issue is almost certainly mechanical.

The two most probable culprits are indeed a failing fan motor or a loose component. The fan motor bearings can wear out over time due to our intense, year-round operation, and when they start to seize, they produce a loud grinding or rattling sound. Alternatively, the blower wheel itself could have become unbalanced or accumulated a heavy, uneven layer of dust and grit, or a screw or mounting bracket inside the indoor unit (AHU) may have vibrated loose.

While it's tempting to try a DIY fix, I strongly advise against it for several UAE-specific reasons. First, opening the sealed refrigerant circuit, which is a high-pressure system, is illegal for unlicensed individuals under UAE regulations and extremely dangerous. Second, accessing the internal components often requires specialized tools and knowledge to avoid causing further, more expensive damage. A simple task like tightening a screw could inadvertently disconnect a critical sensor or wiring harness.

Given that the noise is most prominent under high load (evenings), the stress on the compromised part is significant and risks a complete failure, leaving you without cooling during peak heat. For an accurate diagnosis and safe, compliant repair, you need a certified technician.

We can dispatch a specialist to your villa to diagnose the exact cause. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
