How to remove and prevent mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling so humid lately, and I just found some black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the shoe racks. We had the AC serviced a few months ago, but it’s clearly not keeping up. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and what’s the best dehumidifier or product I can get here in the UAE to stop it from coming back?

Good morning from Saniservice. This is a very common issue we see in Dubai, especially in villas in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The combination of high ambient humidity and powerful AC units creating cold surfaces is a perfect recipe for condensation and subsequent mold growth.
First, and most importantly: if that black spot is larger than about one square foot, or if you have any respiratory sensitivities in the household, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing it can aerosolize spores. For a small area behind the shoe rack, you can carefully address it. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water—avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and can actually feed the root structure. Scrub the area gently, dry it completely with a fan, and then dispose of all the cleaning materials. The root cause is the humidity. An AC service focuses on coolant levels and mechanics, not necessarily on its dehumidification capacity, which is the key function here in the UAE. To supplement, you need a dedicated desiccant dehumidifier, not a refrigerant type, as they perform better in our climate. Look for brands like Ebac or Meaco, available at ACE Hardware or online, sized for the volume of that room. However, the presence of visible mold often indicates a wider, hidden issue. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts use thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture pockets in walls and conduct air quality tests to determine spore count levels, which is crucial for health. We provide a full report compliant with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards.
