Black mold in AC making baby sick: emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a funny damp smell for a couple of weeks, and now my youngest has developed a really bad cough that gets worse at night. I’ve just spotted some black specks around the air vent in the bedroom. Is this something I need to call the landlord about as an emergency, or can it wait until next week for regular maintenance?

Based on the symptoms and signs you've described, this absolutely constitutes an emergency that requires immediate attention, not next week's maintenance. The combination of a persistent damp smell from the AC, visible black specks around the vent, and your child's worsening respiratory symptoms, especially at night when the AC is likely running, is a classic indicator of a mold infestation.

In the UAE's humid climate, AC units are prime locations for mold growth if not properly maintained. The spores are being circulated directly into your living space, and infants are particularly vulnerable due to their developing respiratory systems. That cough is a significant reaction.

You need to take action on two fronts immediately:

1. Medical: Consult your pediatrician without delay. Inform them of the potential mold exposure so they can properly assess your child's cough.
2. Environmental: This is a landlord issue. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, landlords are obligated to provide a habitable and healthy living environment. A mold-contaminated AC unit falls under this. You must notify them in writing (email is best for a paper trail) today, describing the issue and your child's illness, and demand immediate professional inspection and remediation. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the situation worse.

For a certified inspection and a definitive report you can provide to your landlord, I strongly recommend you call a professional. We can conduct air quality and swab tests to identify the mold type and contamination level, which is often necessary to get landlords to act.
