Is this black mold dangerous and an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from this black speckled stuff growing behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall and I only noticed it when I was rearranging furniture a few days ago. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but I'm worried it's been there longer. Is this the dangerous kind of mold and do I need to get an emergency specialist, or can it wait until next week?

Based on your description, the black speckled growth behind the wardrobe is a significant concern, especially given your children's symptoms. The persistent humidity in Dubai, combined with poor air circulation behind large furniture, creates a prime environment for mold growth. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum), any mold proliferation in a living space can be problematic and allergenic.
The coughing is a classic immune response to mold spores, which become airborne and are inhaled. This is not something to ignore. In the UAE, the high indoor humidity from AC systems can often lead to such issues if there's a underlying moisture problem, like a small plumbing leak in the wall or condensation. This situation warrants a professional inspection. We would need to identify the exact species to determine the toxicity level and, more importantly, locate the moisture source to prevent recurrence. DIY attempts can often disturb the colony, causing a massive release of spores. While it may not be a midnight emergency, I would not recommend waiting a week with children experiencing symptoms. Please contact us for a comprehensive assessment. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source and take air/surface samples for lab analysis. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection. We can advise on immediate steps to minimize exposure until we arrive. |
