AC grinding noise, poor cooling: repair or replace cost?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has started making a really loud grinding noise whenever it kicks on, and it’s been struggling to get the room below 24 degrees even at night. We’re in a villa in Al Barsha that’s about 8 years old, and the unit is probably the original one from when it was built. I’m worried a full replacement is coming, but I’m not sure if it’s something a technician could just fix. What’s the ballpark cost difference between a major repair and a full new unit installation for a single room?

Good afternoon. That grinding noise paired with poor cooling is a classic and serious symptom we see often here in Dubai, especially in original units from 8-year-old villas. Based on your description, this isn't a minor fix.

The loud grinding noise is almost certainly a sign of a failing compressor or a seized/blown motor bearing within the outdoor condenser unit. These are the heart of the AC system. When they begin to fail, the unit loses its ability to pump refrigerant efficiently, which directly explains why it can't achieve the set temperature, especially during our extreme summer loads.

For a system of that age, a compressor replacement is a major repair. The part alone for a single split unit compressor can range from AED 1,800 to AED 3,500+, and the labor and refrigerant recharge will add another AED 1,000 to AED 1,500. You're looking at a total repair cost in the ballpark of AED 2,800 to AED 5,000.

However, investing that much into an 8-year-old R410a unit is often not advisable. You're putting a new heart into an aging body. The new compressor's warranty may be void if the supporting components (coils, circuit board) are also aged and fail shortly after. A new, high-efficiency inverter unit for a master bedroom, supplied and installed, will typically cost between AED 4,500 and AED 7,500. While the initial outlay is higher, you get a full manufacturer's warranty, significantly lower electricity bills (DEWA will thank you), and reliable cooling.

Given the potential for a misdiagnosis, a professional inspection is critical. Our technicians can perform a full diagnostic to confirm the exact fault and provide you with a transparent quote for both repair and replacement options. This is the only way to make a truly informed financial decision.

Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) to schedule that assessment. We serve Al Barsha daily and can have someone out to you promptly.
