Black mold in Dubai villa causing coughs: test or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot this winter, and I just noticed a small patch of black spots in the corner behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Mirdif villa for two years and never had an issue until this unusually humid season. Is this something I can test for myself with a kit from the hardware store, or is it better to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Good question, and a very common issue we're seeing in Mirdif and across Dubai this season. That persistent cough in kids is a major red flag, and combined with the visual growth, this warrants immediate attention.

First, I strongly advise against using a DIY hardware store test kit here in the UAE. These kits are notoriously unreliable. They can't tell you the type or concentration of mold spores, which is critical for understanding the health risk and planning remediation. They often give false negatives or identify harmless spores, leading you to underestimate a serious problem. The humid climate here creates perfect conditions for toxic black mold (like Stachybotrys), which those kits cannot reliably differentiate from other types.

Given the symptoms and the visual confirmation, you need a professional assessment. We use advanced tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the hidden source of the moisture—which is the real problem—and then take air and surface samples. These samples are analyzed in an accredited lab to identify the species and spore count, which is essential for a proper remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality's health and safety standards. Trying to handle a potentially toxic species like Stachybotrys yourself can aerosolize the spores and make the contamination much, much worse.
