Is damp and black mold urgent for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past week and I just found a bunch of black spots behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We've lived in this Marina apartment for two years and never had an issue, but it feels really damp lately. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a vinegar spray for now?

Based on your description, this is an urgent situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of visible black mold, a persistent damp feeling, and your children's respiratory symptoms (coughing) is a significant health and environmental red flag.

In the UAE's high-humidity climate, particularly in coastal areas like the Marina, air conditioning systems create constant temperature differentials that lead to condensation. This moisture, often hidden behind furniture or within walls, provides the perfect breeding ground for toxic mold species like Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold). The spores released are mycotoxins and can cause severe allergic reactions, asthma exacerbations, and persistent respiratory issues, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing.

Attempting a DIY solution with vinegar is strongly discouraged. Surface cleaning does not address the root moisture problem or the hyphal roots of the mold penetrating porous materials like drywall. Disturbing it without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, drastically worsening your indoor air quality and potentially contaminating other areas of your apartment.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, mold remediation must be handled by certified professionals to ensure it is eradicated safely and effectively. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging to find the hidden source of dampness, and professional-grade antimicrobials. For the health of your family, I recommend you cease use of the room and contact a specialist immediately.
