Is black mold in Dubai causing my child's asthma?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Mirdif villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots behind our bedroom wardrobe. I only saw it because my 5-year-old’s asthma has been way worse this past month and I was looking for a cause. Is this type of mold in Dubai known to cause serious respiratory issues, or am I overreacting?

Based on your description, it is highly plausible that the black, fuzzy growth discovered behind the wardrobe is contributing to the exacerbation of your child's asthma. In Dubai's climate, the combination of high humidity and year-round air conditioning creates a significant risk for mold proliferation, particularly in concealed, poorly ventilated areas like behind large furniture. The constant cooling cycles of AC units can lead to condensation, providing the persistent moisture necessary for mold colonies to thrive.

The type of mold is less critical than the presence of the mold itself and the quantity of spores it is releasing into your indoor air. All molds, including the common black-colored types like Cladosporium or Aspergillus found here in the UAE, are potent allergens and respiratory irritants. For individuals with asthma, especially children with developing respiratory systems, exposure can directly trigger more frequent and severe attacks, increased wheezing, and heightened sensitivity to other environmental triggers. You are not overreacting; this is a serious indoor air quality concern.

A professional inspection is absolutely warranted. We would conduct a thorough assessment to identify the exact species (to rule out toxigenic types like Stachybotrys), determine the extent of the contamination, and identify the precise moisture source to prevent recurrence. DIY removal is strongly discouraged as it can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing exposure.
