How to dry wet carpet and prevent black mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the carpet underneath it. I've been wiping it up, but now I'm terrified that black mold is starting to grow in the fibers and the humidity is just making it worse. What's the best way to completely dry this area and treat it to prevent a full-blown mold problem?

The persistent water leakage from your AC unit in JVC is a classic trigger for mold growth, exacerbated by Dubai's high ambient humidity which prevents natural drying. Your concern is valid; the damp carpet fibers and underlying padding create an ideal microenvironment for Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) and other species to proliferate.

Immediate action is critical. First, address the source: shut off the AC unit and call an HVAC technician to repair the condensate drain line or pan, which is likely clogged or damaged. For the carpet, superficial wiping is insufficient. You must extract as much water as possible using a wet-dry vacuum. Following extraction, aggressive mechanical drying is required. Utilize high-velocity air movers (axial fans) and a commercial-grade dehumidifier, not just a household fan. This combination is essential to forcibly evaporate moisture from the fibers and subfloor and then capture it from the air, overcoming the high humidity. The carpet may need to be lifted to properly dry and inspect the underside and the underlying pad, which often retains moisture and is a primary reservoir for mold.

Given the visible concern and the climate, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified mold inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness in walls and subfloors that are not visible to the naked eye. If mold is present, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and contaminate the entire apartment. Remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment.
