Is bathroom mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found black and greenish spots spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It's the one we all use daily in our Jumeirah Park villa, and the ventilation isn't great in there. Could this mold be the cause of their respiratory issues and what's the most effective way to get rid of it for good?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth in your bathroom is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The black and greenish spots are likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, common in Dubai's humid climate. These molds release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which, when inhaled, are known respiratory irritants, especially in children whose systems are more sensitive. The poor ventilation in your Jumeirah Park villa's bathroom creates a perfect incubator, trapping moisture from daily showers and allowing these colonies to thrive.

In the UAE, the year-round reliance on air conditioning can create significant condensation issues, particularly in high-humidity zones like bathrooms. Simply wiping away visible mold is insufficient, as the root cause—excess moisture and a likely established presence within the grout and behind tiles—remains unaddressed. Over-the-counter cleaners often only bleach the surface, leaving the fungal structure intact to regrow quickly.

For a situation involving health symptoms and widespread growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We would conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the contamination and the source of moisture, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and building standards. Remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and addressing the ventilation issue to prevent recurrence.
