Black mold in Dubai closet: DIY clean or call inspector?« Back to Previous Page
|
The corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the shoes, has started to show these black speckles. We're in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm worried the recent humidity has made it worse. I'm pretty handy, but I don't know if I should just scrub it with bleach or if this is a sign of a bigger problem I need a professional to check out. Is a DIY cleaning enough for this or should I call for a proper mold inspection?

Based on the description of black speckles in a closet within an older Jumeirah building, my professional recommendation is to call for a professional inspection immediately. The combination of an older building's potential for hidden condensation issues and Dubai's persistently high ambient humidity creates an ideal environment for mold that often extends beyond the visible surface.
DIY cleaning with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture, and fails to address the root cause—the underlying moisture source. In a closet, this is frequently due to condensation from adjacent cooling lines, a leaking pipe within the wall, or humidity being trapped by stored items. Scrubbing can also aerosolize harmful spores, leading to indoor air quality issues and potential health risks. A certified inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment that includes moisture mapping with thermal imaging and hygrometers to identify the exact moisture source, followed by air and surface sampling to determine the species and concentration of the mold. This is critical, as some species like Stachybotrys (true black mold) require specific remediation protocols for occupant safety. Given the climate and the potential for structural and health implications, a professional approach is the only way to guarantee the problem is resolved. For a definitive diagnosis and a safe remediation plan, I advise contacting our specialists at Saniservice.
