Can I clean this wall mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's an interior wall that doesn't get much air, and with the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company for a proper remediation?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The persistent high humidity, coupled with condensation from year-round air conditioning and poor air circulation behind furniture, creates an ideal breeding ground. While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, the fact it's an interior wall and has been growing for some time raises significant concerns.
Cleaning visible mold with bleach is not a recommended or permanent solution. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration but does not address the root cause—the moisture—and more critically, it does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) embedded within porous materials like drywall and paint. This leads to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, bleach can add moisture to the wall and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. For a case like yours, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The mold behind the sofa could be a symptom of a larger issue, such as a hidden plumbing leak within the wall or compromised insulation. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the contamination, which is almost always greater than what is visible. In the UAE, proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved, specialized biocides—not bleach—to eliminate the colony. Finally, addressing the moisture source is paramount to prevent recurrence.
