Should I clean black mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Mirdif. It’s a big patch, maybe two feet wide, and the room has felt really damp since the weather changed. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description—a two-foot patch of black spots behind a wardrobe in Mirdif, persistent coughing in children, and a noticeably damp room—this is a serious situation that absolutely requires professional assessment and remediation. The combination of visible growth and health symptoms indicates a significant mold issue that DIY methods cannot adequately address.

Attempting to clean this with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the roots (hyphae) growing within the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can agitate the colony, releasing a massive amount of harmful spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms. In the humid Dubai climate, where AC use creates constant condensation and high indoor humidity, the underlying moisture problem will simply cause the mold to return rapidly.

The described scenario meets several criteria for mandatory professional intervention: the affected area is large (greater than 10 square feet), the building materials are likely porous, and vulnerable occupants (children) are already exhibiting health effects. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source hidden within your walls and conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count and species, which is critical for understanding the health risk.

For a situation of this severity in Dubai, I recommend you contact our team immediately for a comprehensive inspection and remediation plan. We are certified in the protocols required for safe and effective mold removal. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. Do not disturb the area before our inspection.
