How urgent is black mold behind my bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom. It’s on an interior wall facing the corridor, not an outside wall. We run the AC constantly, but I’m worried this has been growing for a while unseen. How urgent is it to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The presence of black spots spreading on an interior wall, hidden behind a wardrobe for a potential two-year period, indicates a persistent moisture issue. The constant AC use, while intended to cool, can actually contribute to the problem if the unit is not properly maintained or if the room's humidity levels are not effectively controlled. In Dubai's climate, the high external humidity can lead to significant condensation within cold spots in a building envelope, creating the perfect environment for mold growth, even on interior walls.

Attempting to clean this with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root system. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home. Disturbing the mold without proper containment protocols poses a health risk.

The urgency is high. A professional inspection is critical to identify the exact species of mold (e.g., Stachybotrys, or "black mold," requires specific remediation protocols) and, most importantly, to locate and diagnose the source of the moisture. This could be a hidden plumbing leak, condensation from the AC system, or a breach in the building's vapor barrier. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the issue accurately.

For a comprehensive assessment and a remediation plan that complies with Dubai Municipality standards, I recommend contacting our team immediately.
