Can I clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because of all the humidity lately. The patch is about the size of a dinner plate and the wall feels a bit damp. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on the description of your situation, I strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself and recommend you call a professional inspection and remediation company like Saniservice immediately.

The combination of a damp wall, a visible patch the size of a dinner plate, and associated health symptoms in your children elevates this from a simple cleaning task to a potential health hazard and building integrity issue. In the UAE's humid climate, especially with year-round AC use that can cause condensation, what you see on the surface is often just the "fruit" of a larger, hidden fungal network within the wall cavity. Cleaning the surface with bleach is ineffective; it may bleach the colour but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) and can actually aggravate the spores, worsening airborne contamination.

The persistent dampness indicates an underlying moisture problem that must be identified and resolved first—whether it's a hidden plumbing leak, capillary rising damp, or condensation. Without solving the moisture source, the mold will return rapidly. Furthermore, improper disturbance without professional containment and HEPA filtration can spread toxic spores throughout your home's air, exacerbating your family's respiratory issues.

For the health of your family and to ensure the problem is solved correctly, a certified professional inspection is essential. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to determine the full extent of the contamination and identify the moisture source. Our remediation process then involves engineering controls, safe removal, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence.

Please do not attempt this yourself. For a proper assessment and quote, call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
