How to quickly remove mold from AC closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little for a while, but after the heavy humidity last week, I just pulled out my winter jackets and found a huge patch of black and green mold all over the back wall. It’s spreading onto some of my clothes too. What’s the fastest way to handle this myself before I have to call a professional?

As a certified mold remediation specialist in Dubai, I must first stress that a significant mold outbreak due to AC leakage is a serious health and structural concern. The UAE's high humidity, especially post-rainfall, creates the perfect environment for rapid mold colonization, particularly in enclosed spaces like AC closets.

For immediate containment, you must address the moisture source first. Turn off the AC unit's circuit breaker to prevent electrical hazards. Soak up any standing water and place a dehumidifier in the room immediately; this is critical in our climate to halt spore amplification.

For the visible mold on non-porous surfaces (the wall), a solution of detergent and warm water can be used for initial scrubbing. However, I must emphasize that this is only a superficial measure. The mold on your jackets is a more complex issue. Textiles are porous, and mold roots (hyphae) penetrate deep into the fibers. DIY cleaning with vinegar or bleach will not eradicate these roots and can often set the stain. For valuable items, professional hygienization is the only guaranteed method to salvage them.

Crucially, what you see is only a fraction of the problem. The leak has almost certainly caused hidden microbial growth within the wall cavity and the AC drip pan itself, which requires specialized equipment like borescopes and moisture meters to assess. DIY attempts often disturb spores, causing them to become airborne and spread throughout your property.

Given the extent you've described, this is not a DIY situation. Professional inspection and remediation are mandated by Dubai Municipality standards to ensure the problem is solved at its source and to prevent future recurrence and potential health issues. For a situation this advanced, I strongly recommend you cease DIY efforts and contact our team for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an emergency inspection.
