AC leak causing mold on leather, who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the floor, and now I’ve spotted black speckles on a few of my handbags and shoes. It’s not a huge puddle, but the humidity in that small, enclosed space is really high. What’s the best way to clean the mold off my leather items and, more importantly, who should I call to fix the AC unit to stop this from happening again?

The black speckles you're seeing on your leather goods are almost certainly mold growth, a direct result of the elevated humidity from your AC leak. This is a very common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the year-round reliance on air conditioning, which can lead to condensation problems.

For the leather items, it's crucial to act carefully. Do not use bleach or household cleaners, as they can permanently damage the material. Gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth to remove surface spores. For light growth, a solution of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol applied sparingly with a microfiber cloth can be effective. Always test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first and allow the items to dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. However, mold can penetrate porous materials, and improper cleaning can set the stains.

The root cause must be addressed immediately. A leaking indoor AC unit signifies a problem that requires a professional HVAC technician. The issue could be a clogged condensate drain line, a damaged drain pan, low refrigerant, or improper installation—all of which are common in our climate. Simply cleaning the mold without fixing the leak will guarantee its return.

Given the confirmed presence of moisture and mold, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine the extent of the moisture intrusion and mold growth within the closet structure itself, which often goes unseen. We will identify the species and provide a protocol for effective remediation of the area and safe cleaning of your belongings.

For immediate assistance with both the inspection and remediation, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We will also coordinate with vetted HVAC specialists to ensure the AC unit is repaired correctly to prevent future occurrences.
