What is the best way to remove shower grout mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed these black spots growing along the grout of our shower tiles. I think it’s been there a while but it’s definitely gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. The bathroom doesn’t have a window and the exhaust fan is pretty weak. What's the best way to tackle this myself before it gets out of control?

Based on the conditions you've described in your JVC apartment, you are dealing with a classic case of bathroom mold exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The combination of high humidity, a lack of natural ventilation, and an underperforming exhaust fan creates a perfect environment for mold growth on porous grout.

For a contained surface-level issue, you can attempt a DIY remediation. First, ensure you are wearing PPE: an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not use bleach, as it only bleaches the mold superficially and does not address the root moisture problem. Instead, use a commercial fungicidal cleaner specifically designed for bathrooms and approved for use in the UAE. Alternatively, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a paste of baking soda and water can be effective for mild cases. Scrub the affected grout lines thoroughly with a stiff brush. The key is to not just wipe the surface but to agitate and penetrate the porous material.

However, this is only a temporary solution if the underlying moisture issue is not resolved. The weak exhaust fan is a critical problem. It must be able to adequately exchange the moist air; you may need to have it inspected or upgraded. Furthermore, after every shower, you should manually wipe down wet surfaces and run the fan for at least 30-45 minutes.

It is important to note that if the mold has penetrated deeply into the grout or has spread to areas behind tiles (often indicated by a persistent musty odor or crumbling grout), professional assessment is required. Disturbing extensive mold colonies without proper containment can cause spores to spread throughout your apartment. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden moisture sources and assess the full extent of the contamination, ensuring a complete and permanent solution, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality standards.
