Could hidden mold be causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the last three weeks and I'm starting to worry. I just pulled our large winter wardrobe away from the bedroom wall in our Jumeirah apartment and found a huge patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from the humidity. The wall even feels a bit damp. Could this mold be the cause of their coughing and should I get them to a doctor immediately?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the hidden black mold growth is the primary cause of your children's persistent coughing. The presence of a large patch, coupled with the dampness in the wall, indicates an active moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity meets year-round air conditioning, this is a common occurrence. The temperature differential between the cool interior walls and the humid air can cause significant condensation in poorly ventilated areas, such as behind large furniture.

The cough is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, which are mycotoxins and allergens. Children are particularly susceptible to these airborne particles, which can cause ongoing respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and exacerbate asthma. You should certainly have them evaluated by a pediatrician to address the immediate health symptoms.

However, treating the symptoms is only part of the solution. The mold colony must be professionally addressed. In the UAE, remediation is governed by strict standards (like Dubai Municipality guidelines) to ensure it is done safely and effectively. Disturbing the mold yourself can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically worsening the indoor air quality and potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment.

I strongly recommend you cease use of that room and contact a professional inspection and remediation company immediately. Our team at Saniservice is certified and follows all local protocols. We can conduct a thorough assessment to determine the full extent of the mold, identify the precise moisture source, and execute a controlled remediation plan.
