Should I get black mold professionally inspected for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’ve just found a patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and it’s been incredibly humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. Is this something I need to get professionally inspected immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, I strongly recommend a professional mold inspection immediately. The presence of visible black mold, coupled with persistent respiratory symptoms in children and the high-humidity environment of a Dubai villa, creates a scenario that demands expert assessment.

Attempting to handle this yourself with bleach is not advisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and only bleaches the mold's pigment, not eliminating the root structure or the microscopic spores causing the coughs. Disturbing the patch without proper containment protocols can aerosolize these spores, significantly worsening the indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating your children's health issues.

The climate in Jumeirah is a significant contributing factor. Year-round AC use can lead to cold spots and condensation within walls and closets, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold behind furniture or boxes, exactly as you've found. A professional inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping with thermal cameras and hygrometers to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion, as well as air and surface sampling to identify the species of mold and spore concentration levels. This data is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol and for verifying the environment is safe after cleanup.

Given the health symptoms, this is a serious case. For a thorough assessment and to discuss a safe remediation plan, I advise you to contact our specialists.
