How to safely remove black mold from bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. I’m really worried it’s spread to our belongings. What’s the most effective and safe way to clean this ourselves, and should we be throwing out all the clothes that were near it?

Based on the location of your villa in Arabian Ranches and the description of a black, fuzzy patch on an exterior wall, this is highly indicative of a condensation issue, a common problem in Dubai's climate due to the extreme humidity and constant air conditioning creating thermal bridges. The wall is likely colder than the surrounding air, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect environment for mold growth.

For a small patch (less than 1 square meter), you may attempt to clean it yourself. Safety is paramount. You must wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. Place a bucket of water mixed with a few drops of detergent nearby to trap spores during cleaning. Do not dry brush or vacuum, as this will aerosolize spores. Instead, wipe the area with a damp cloth soaked in a detergent solution. After cleaning, the surface must be wiped again with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution to disinfect and inhibit regrowth. Discard all cleaning materials in a sealed bag.

Concerning your clothes, do not automatically discard them. Mold on non-porous surfaces like wall paint can be cleaned. However, porous materials like textiles require professional assessment. I strongly recommend a professional hygienization service for your belongings to ensure spores are eradicated, as they can cause health issues and cross-contaminate other areas.

Given that the mold is on an exterior wall, this suggests an underlying moisture issue that cleaning alone will not solve. The root cause, likely condensation or a minor leak, must be identified and rectified to prevent recurrence. For a comprehensive assessment, moisture mapping, and guaranteed remediation that adheres to Dubai Municipality guidelines, a professional inspection is essential.
