AC mold behind headboard: DIY or call a pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a while, and now I’m seeing a decent-sized black splotch of mold spreading behind the headboard. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still there and I'm worried it's inside the wall. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a persistent AC leak leading to a black splotch that has penetrated the wall and a persistent musty odor despite surface cleaning—this is a situation that requires professional intervention.

Vinegar and other DIY cleaners are only effective on surface-level mold growth. The smell lingering indicates that the fungal roots (hyphae) have infiltrated the porous wall material, such as drywall or plaster. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, this trapped moisture creates an ideal environment for mold to thrive inside the wall cavity, potentially compromising the structural integrity and significantly impacting indoor air quality. Attempting to clean it yourself with stronger chemicals will not address the hidden contamination and could aerosolize spores, spreading the problem.

The root cause is the AC leak, which must be repaired by a certified HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence. For the mold remediation, UAE regulations and best practices require a contained remediation process. This involves isolating the affected area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials, and utilizing industrial-grade HEPA filtration devices to scrub the air of airborne spores. A surface wipe is entirely insufficient for this scenario.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice uses moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of damage within the wall and follows IICRC standards for complete removal.
