Should I remove bedroom mold myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It’s been really humid lately and the closet is always a bit damp. What’s the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call the building management first?

Based on your description, this is a common issue in Dubai, particularly during the humid summer months. The location on an exterior wall strongly suggests a condensation problem, exacerbated by your air conditioning creating a significant temperature differential between the indoor cold wall and the outdoor heat and humidity. This persistent dampness is the perfect breeding ground for mold.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue is not resolved. You must identify and address the source of the dampness, which could be inadequate insulation in the wall or excessive humidity in the closet.

I strongly recommend you also notify your building management immediately. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, the structural integrity of the building, including the external envelope and its ability to prevent water ingress, is the responsibility of the property owner/management. They need to be made aware of the potential defect causing this condensation.

Given the mold is in your bedroom, where you spend significant time, and the fact it has returned, a professional inspection is highly advised. Spores can become airborne and affect air quality. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment using moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cause—whether it's a hidden leak, insufficient insulation, or simply chronic condensation. We will provide a detailed report and a remediation plan.
