Can I clean AC mold with bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom closet has been leaking a bit and now I'm seeing black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean with bleach from Carrefour, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth fueled by a combination of an AC condensate leak and Dubai's high ambient humidity. The black spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus, both of which thrive in the constant moisture from a leaking AC unit.

Using standard bleach from a supermarket is strongly discouraged for this type of remediation. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster; it only removes the surface discoloration while leaving the fungal roots (hyphae) intact. This leads to rapid regrowth. More critically, bleach can release harmful chlorine fumes, especially in the confined, poorly ventilated space of a closet, creating a significant indoor air quality hazard.

The leak must be addressed first. A qualified AC technician needs to repair the condensate drain line or pan to eliminate the moisture source. For the mold itself, professional assessment is highly recommended. The mold is behind a wardrobe, indicating a hidden infestation. Spores will have spread into the closet and potentially the HVAC system, requiring proper containment, HEPA vacuuming, and application of EPA-approved, non-toxic biocides to ensure complete eradication and prevent cross-contamination.

Given the climate-driven nature of this problem in the UAE, a professional company like Saniservice is equipped to not only remediate the current growth but also provide solutions to manage humidity and prevent recurrence. For a proper inspection and remediation protocol, it is best to call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
