Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks and now I’m seeing these black specks spreading near the vent. It’s starting to smell damp, and I’m worried it’s affecting the air we breathe at night. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth due to AC condensate leakage, a very common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate. The black specks are likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, both of which can produce mycotoxins and allergens that degrade indoor air quality, especially concerning in a bedroom.

While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a detergent solution (never use bleach, as it does not kill the root and can release harmful fumes), your situation requires professional intervention. The leak has been ongoing for weeks, meaning moisture has penetrated the wall cavity, drywall, and possibly the insulation behind it. This creates a hidden reservoir of mold that you cannot see or effectively treat with DIY methods. Simply wiping the visible surface is a temporary and ineffective solution.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation for HVAC systems, as per industry standards, involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, physically removing and disposing of contaminated porous materials (like drywall and insulation), and using specialized antimicrobial agents to treat the area. The root cause—the AC leak—must also be repaired by an HVAC technician to prevent immediate recurrence.

Given the health risks and the complexity of ensuring the mold is fully eradicated from the AC unit and walls, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation.
