How to remove mold from clothes and prevent closet humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom's walk-in closet, which has no windows, has a persistent damp smell even though we run the AC constantly. I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes I stored in the back and found several sweaters with fuzzy black spots on them, which I'm sure is mold. I'm really worried it's going to spread to everything else in there and affect our health. What's the most effective way to clean the existing mold off our clothes and what can I do to permanently prevent the humidity from coming back in this enclosed space?

The discovery of black mold on clothing in an enclosed closet is a classic symptom of unmanaged humidity, a prevalent issue in Dubai due to our high ambient moisture levels and year-round AC use, which can create significant condensation in poorly ventilated spaces.
For the affected clothes, immediate action is required. Do not attempt to brush the mold off, as this will aerosolize the spores. For washable fabrics like your sweaters, a professional-grade approach is to pre-treat the spots with a solution of white vinegar or a specialized antimicrobial cleaner. Launder them at the highest temperature the fabric allows, adding a mold-inhibiting additive to the wash. However, this only addresses the surface contamination on a few items. The presence of a persistent damp smell indicates a deeper, systemic issue within the closet environment. The mold growth on your clothes is merely the visible sign of a larger colony likely established in the walls, ceiling, or behind baseboards of that enclosed space. Permanently resolving the humidity requires addressing the root cause. In a windowless closet, this typically involves installing a supplementary ventilation system, such as a small ductless dehumidifier or an exhaust fan, to actively manage the moisture load that your central AC cannot handle in an enclosed, dead-air space. Simply running the AC is not sufficient. Given the health risks associated with black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) and the high probability of hidden growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the humidity and the full extent of the contamination. We then provide a targeted remediation and humidification plan to solve the problem permanently.
