Found black mold in bathroom; DIY or professional with kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I finally checked behind the laundry hamper in our master bathroom. I found a patch of black mold spreading from the corner of the shower where the grout is cracked. It’s been really humid here in Jumeirah for the last few months, and the window doesn't get opened much.
What's the best way to handle this safely myself, or should I get a professional cleaning company to deal with it because of the kids?

Based on your description, this situation warrants a professional assessment, especially given the health symptoms in your children and the conducive conditions in Dubai. The black mold you've found, likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, is a significant concern. The high humidity in Jumeirah, combined with constant AC use creating temperature differentials and condensation on cold surfaces, provides the perfect environment for mycotoxin-producing molds to thrive behind fixtures and within wall cavities.
A DIY approach with store-bought bleach or vinegar is not recommended. These are surface-level solutions that fail to address the root moisture problem and can actually aggravate the situation by releasing a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins into the air, potentially worsening respiratory issues. The cracked grout indicates moisture intrusion into the substrate, meaning the colonization is almost certainly more extensive than what is visible. For the safety of your family, a professional inspection is critical. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and specialized borescopes to assess the full extent of the damage behind walls. Our remediation process then involves engineering controls: containing the area with negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved, non-toxic antimicrobial agents. Finally, we identify and rectify the source of moisture, which is essential to prevent recurrence. Do not disturb the area.
