Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks since the humidity shot up. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to deal with it properly?

The black, fuzzy mold you've described behind your wardrobe is a serious concern, especially given its link to the AC leak. In Dubai's high humidity, this is a common but hazardous scenario. While small, superficial mold on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be addressed with a detergent solution, your situation requires extreme caution.

The presence of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum or other toxigenic species) spreading from an AC leak indicates a sustained moisture issue. Bleach is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and gypsum board, as it only bleaches the surface without addressing the root colony. More critically, disturbing the mold during DIY cleaning can aerosolize mycotoxins and spores, significantly increasing your exposure and contaminating your entire bedroom air supply.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, proper remediation involves identifying the moisture source, isolating the contaminated area with negative air pressure, using professional-grade HEPA filtration to remove spores, and safely disposing of irreparably damaged porous materials. Given the mold is behind furniture and linked to the HVAC system, a professional inspection is absolutely essential. The AC unit itself will likely require internal cleaning to prevent systemic contamination.

For a definitive assessment and safe, compliant remediation, I strongly recommend contacting a certified professional.
