Can I clean this mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a little bit of water onto the carpet below it, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots spreading out from the damp area. I wiped it with vinegar but the smell is still there and I'm worried it’s coming back. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner from Ace Hardware, or is it time to just call a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description from Jumeirah Village Circle, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by our Dubai climate. The continuous AC operation, combined with a minor leak, creates a perfect environment for mold due to the constant humidity and condensation. The black spots you see are likely the spore-producing bodies of the mold colony, but the actual fungal network (hyphae) is likely embedded deep within the carpet fibers and possibly the underlying padding.

While vinegar is a common home remedy, it is not an EPA-approved biocide and is ineffective at killing the root structure of many mold types. DIY cleaners from Ace Hardware may only bleach the visible surface, leaving the colony intact to regrow, which is what you are experiencing. More concerning is that improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your apartment.

In the UAE, proper mold remediation is not just about cleaning; it's about addressing the moisture source and containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, adhering to standards like the IICRC S520. Given the persistent dampness and regrowth, the moisture has likely penetrated beyond the visible surface.

For a situation involving HVAC-related water damage and regrowth after a DIY attempt, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the full extent of the moisture and hidden mold, which is crucial for an effective remediation plan.
