Bathroom grout black and spreading, call cleaner or contractor?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom in Jumeirah has turned completely black, and it’s been spreading for a couple of months now. We tried scrubbing it with bleach, but it just comes back worse. With the humidity here, I'm worried it's behind the walls. Should I just call a professional cleaning company, or is this something that needs a full-on contractor for remediation, and what’s the typical cost range in Dubai for a job like this?

Based on your description of recurring black grout in your Jumeirah bathroom, this is almost certainly a persistent mold infestation, not just surface dirt. The high humidity in Dubai, combined with condensation from showers and year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive within the wall cavity, which is why surface cleaning with bleach fails. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and can actually feed the root structure (hyphae) deeper within the porous grout and behind the tiles.
This requires professional mold remediation, not a standard cleaning service. A cleaning company will not have the expertise or equipment to address the root cause. The process involves a thorough inspection, often with a borescope to see behind walls, moisture mapping to identify the source, and controlled remediation that includes containment, HEPA filtration, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the underlying moisture issue (often poor ventilation). In the UAE, reputable companies like ours follow IICRC S520 standards for professional mold remediation. For a master bathroom, costs in Dubai can range significantly based on the extent of the infestation. A localized issue may start from AED 2,500, but if the mold has spread behind the walls, the project could range from AED 5,000 to AED 15,000+, depending on the required demolition and reconstruction. I strongly recommend a professional inspection to assess the full scope. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a detailed assessment and quote.
