How to remove and prevent mold behind bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of our bedroom wall, behind the wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and we're in a villa in Jumeirah. I'm worried the humidity from the recent weather is getting trapped back there and causing this mold. What's the best way to clean this off and stop it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a common issue in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning. The wall facing the outside is likely a thermal bridge, where the temperature difference between the cooled interior and the hot, humid exterior causes condensation to form, especially in a stagnant, poorly ventilated space like behind a wardrobe.
For removal, the first step is to move the wardrobe to fully expose the affected area. For a small area of surface mold, you can carefully clean it with a solution of detergent and warm water. However, it is critical to wear proper PPE—an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection—to avoid inhaling spores or causing cross-contamination. Bleach is not recommended as it does not kill the roots and can damage porous surfaces like drywall. The key to a permanent solution is addressing the moisture source. Simply cleaning the mold will result in rapid regrowth. The condensation must be controlled. This requires improving ventilation behind the furniture—leaving a gap between the wall and the wardrobe is essential. Furthermore, the thermal bridging of the external wall may need to be assessed; inadequate insulation is a frequent culprit. Given that the mold is on an external wall and has been developing for some time, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location and severity of the condensation and moisture intrusion. We then provide a remediation protocol that follows UAE standards, which may include professional-grade antimicrobial treatment for the wall and recommendations for environmental controls. For a lasting fix and to ensure the spores are properly eradicated, I recommend contacting our team at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment.
