How to stop closet humidity and clean black spots?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall facing the marina. My wife’s leather handbags stored in there even feel slightly damp. What’s the best way to clean this and, more importantly, how can I stop the humidity from getting in there in the first place?

Based on your description of black spots and damp leather goods in a closet on an interior wall facing the marina, you are almost certainly dealing with a mold issue caused by condensation and high humidity, a very common problem in Dubai. The interior wall likely contains cold water pipes for the air conditioning system. When the humid marina air penetrates the closet, it condenses on these cold surfaces, creating the perfect damp environment for mold growth.

For cleaning, avoid bleach. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner, ensuring you wear PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles). Scrub the affected area thoroughly. However, this is only a superficial fix. The critical step is addressing the moisture source.

To stop the humidity, you must create a vapor barrier. The most effective solution is to seal the closet from the internal atmosphere. This involves installing a tightly sealed door with weather stripping and ensuring any gaps or cracks in the walls are filled with silicone-based sealant. Placing moisture-absorbing desiccant bags inside the closet can provide temporary relief but is not a long-term solution.

Given the persistent dampness, the underlying issue could be more severe, such as a minor plumbing leak or significant interstitial condensation within the wall cavity. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation points and humidity sources, which is crucial for a permanent remediation plan.
