Is mold in my AC causing my illness?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a damp, musty smell for the last few weeks. My throat has been constantly scratchy and I've been getting headaches that I never used to get. I pulled the filter out and the inside of the unit looks like it has black and green fuzzy patches. Could this mold be causing my symptoms and who is responsible for getting it cleaned, me or my landlord?

Based on your description of visible black and green fuzzy patches inside the AC unit, accompanied by a musty odor and the onset of health symptoms like a scratchy throat and headaches, it is highly probable that microbial growth, specifically mold, is the cause. The damp, dark, and cool environment of an AC evaporator coil and drain pan is an ideal breeding ground for mold and bacteria, especially in Dubai's high-humidity climate where air conditioners run year-round, leading to constant condensation.
The mycotoxins and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by these colonies are known irritants and can directly cause the respiratory symptoms and headaches you are experiencing. This is a common issue in the region due to the constant cycling of moisture. Regarding responsibility, your landlord is typically obligated under UAE rental law to ensure the property is habitable and that essential services, like a functioning AC system, are maintained. Mold contamination within the central AC unit itself, which is a fixed installation, generally falls under their responsibility to rectify. You should formally notify your landlord or property management company in writing of the issue and request a professional inspection and remediation. We strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize the spores and significantly worsen the contamination throughout your apartment. A professional assessment is crucial to determine the extent of the contamination and to execute a proper hygienization protocol.
