Can I clean bathroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling and in the corners of our master bathroom. The AC vent is right there and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. Is this something I can clean myself with something from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it properly?

The black mold you're describing in your bathroom is a very common issue in Dubai, driven by our high ambient humidity and constant air conditioning use. The AC vent creates a significant temperature differential with the warm, moist bathroom air, leading to excessive condensation on walls and ceilings—this is the primary food source for mold.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 10 square feet), you can attempt to clean it yourself. I recommend using a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store, not just bleach or vinegar, as these often only remove the surface color and not the root structure. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dried afterward. The key is to address the moisture source; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces.

However, given its location near the AC vent, there is a high probability that mold spores have entered and colonized the ductwork itself, which you cannot effectively clean. This will cause continuous recontamination and pose a risk to your entire HVAC system. Furthermore, the persistent growth along the ceiling suggests possible moisture retention within the ceiling board or behind the tiles.

For these reasons, and because improper remediation can aerosolize spores and spread the problem, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use specialized tools like borescopes to inspect inside walls and ducts and moisture meters to find hidden dampness. Saniservice's certified technicians can perform a comprehensive assessment to determine the full extent of the contamination and provide a permanent remediation solution, including HVAC hygienization.
