Is black mold in my Dubai villa making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just found some black speckles on the back of our wardrobe in the master bedroom. We’ve lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for about a year and it’s been fine, but it’s gotten worse since the weather turned more humid. Is this dangerous and what’s the best way to get rid of it safely with the children around?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black speckles are mold, and the nighttime coughing in your children is a significant indicator of a potential health impact. The combination of high humidity, which is a hallmark of Dubai's climate, and a cool surface (like the back of a wardrobe on an exterior wall) creates the perfect conditions for condensation and subsequent mold growth. This is a common issue in villas here, especially during the more humid summer months, as year-round air conditioning can create significant temperature differentials.

The type of mold is critical. While all mold should be treated, certain types like Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "black mold") can produce mycotoxins that are particularly problematic for respiratory health, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing. Persistent coughing, wheezing, and other allergic reactions are common symptoms of mold exposure.

Attempting to remove it yourself with bleach or store-bought solutions is not recommended. This can agitate the spores, releasing them into the air and potentially increasing your family's exposure. For a confirmed identification and to understand the full extent of the infestation—which often grows unseen inside wall cavities—a professional inspection is essential.

I strongly recommend you contact a certified mold inspection and remediation company. We at Saniservice are specialists in this exact scenario. Our process involves a thorough inspection, air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration, and a safe, controlled remediation plan that includes containment and HEPA filtration to protect your family during the process.
