Can I clean bathroom mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our Jumeirah Village bathroom has these black spots that just appeared over the last couple of weeks. It’s right above the shower and seems to be getting bigger, and I’m worried the high humidity is making it spread. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service?

As a certified mold inspector in the UAE, I strongly advise a cautious approach to the black spots on your bathroom ceiling in Jumeirah Village. This is a very common issue here due to our extreme humidity levels, year-round AC use leading to condensation, and often insufficient bathroom ventilation. The location directly above the shower is a primary indicator of a persistent moisture problem.

For a very small, superficial patch (less than 10 sq. ft.), a DIY approach can be attempted. However, bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can actually feed the mold roots inside porous materials like drywall or gypsum board. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrubbing can inadvertently release a large number of spores into the air, so personal protective equipment (PPE) like an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles is non-negotiable.

Given that the patch is growing, it suggests an active moisture issue that simple cleaning will not solve. The growth is likely penetrating the ceiling material itself. In such cases, a professional inspection is critical. We follow strict Dubai Municipality and civil defense guidelines for assessment and remediation. Our process involves identifying the exact moisture source (often a leak from above or chronic condensation), using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras, and then safely containing and removing the affected material to prevent cross-contamination. Simply cleaning the surface will not address the root cause, and the mold will return.

For a proper assessment and a lasting solution, I recommend calling our specialists. We can determine the extent of the problem and provide a compliant remediation plan. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
