How to safely remove and prevent black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’m starting to suspect it’s the black mold I just found in the corner of their bedroom closet. We live in an older villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity is getting trapped in there. What’s the best way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black mold you've described is a serious health concern, especially for children. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth in poorly ventilated spaces like closets, this is a common issue in older villas.

Safely removing it requires caution. For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. First, isolate the area and ensure your children are not present. Wear an N95 respirator, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remediation detergent (avoid bleach, as it only surface-cleans and can exacerbate the problem) and wipe dry. All cleaning materials must be bagged and disposed of immediately. However, given that the mold is in a closet and your children are already symptomatic, this is likely part of a larger problem. Visible mold is often just the "tip of the iceberg," with the main colony growing inside the wall cavity.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the moisture—whether it's condensation from the AC, a small leak, or rising damp—and assess the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves containing the area with negative air pressure, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure complete spore removal and prevent regrowth.

To prevent recurrence, address the humidity. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly to manage condensation, use a dehumidifier, and improve air circulation in the closet.
