Can I clean black mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It must have been growing behind our storage boxes for a while. I'm worried it's from a hidden leak in the wall or just the insane humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires a professional inspection. A large patch of black mold discovered behind stored items is a significant indicator of an ongoing moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, this is most commonly caused by one of two things: a concealed plumbing leak within the wall or severe condensation due to the high humidity interacting with cold surfaces from your AC system. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix; the underlying moisture problem must be identified and resolved, or the mold will return aggressively.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a detergent solution, we strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the roots intact. More critically, it introduces excessive moisture, which can actually fuel further mold growth. Disturbing the colony without proper containment and PPE can also cause a widespread release of harmful spores throughout your bedroom.

The UAE's regulatory framework for healthy buildings, such as the Dubai Green Building Regulations, emphasizes the importance of maintaining indoor air quality and addressing microbial contamination at its source. For a case like yours, a certified professional inspection is crucial. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of moisture hidden within the wall cavity. Only after the leak or condensation issue is repaired can a safe and effective remediation process begin, involving containment, air scrubbing, and the proper antimicrobial agents to ensure complete removal.
