Can I safely remove black mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black fuzzy patches I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because we finally moved that heavy furniture after the recent humidity. It’s on the wall itself and the back of the wardrobe is covered.
What's the best way to handle this safely myself, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the extent of the growth (both on the wall and the furniture), this is a significant infestation that requires professional attention. In Dubai's climate, with its high humidity and constant air conditioning use, mold growth behind furniture is common due to condensation and lack of air circulation. However, attempting to remove a large, established growth yourself is not advisable.
The term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species that can produce mycotoxins. Disturbing it without proper containment protocols aerosolizes these spores and toxins, drastically increasing your family's exposure and potentially worsening respiratory issues like the coughing you've observed. Proper remediation requires more than just wiping it away; it involves source identification, moisture control, engineering controls to prevent cross-contamination, and the use of professional-grade antimicrobials. The UAE's civil defense and municipality regulations often require that significant mold remediation, especially in residential settings affecting health, be handled by certified professionals to ensure it is done safely and effectively, preventing recurrence. For the health of your family and to ensure the mold is eradicated at its source, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified team at Saniservice is equipped with the necessary technology, including moisture meters and thermal imaging, to identify the full extent of the moisture problem. We then execute a controlled remediation process following IICRC standards. Please do not disturb the area.
