Can I clean AC mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, but I just pulled back the corner and found a bunch of black and greenish spots spreading on the wall behind it. I’m worried it’s gotten worse with the recent humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description of the situation, I strongly recommend you stop any DIY cleaning efforts immediately and call a professional for a thorough inspection. The scenario you've described—AC condensate leakage onto porous materials like carpet and drywall over a period of weeks, combined with visible black and greenish microbial growth—is a serious concern, especially given Dubai's high humidity levels which act as a constant accelerant for mold proliferation.

Using supermarket bleach is highly inadvisable. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces as it does not kill the root system (hyphae) of the mold, and its high water content can actually feed the growth you cannot see within the wall cavity. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a significant health risk through inhalation.

In the UAE, professional remediation follows strict IICRC standards. Our process involves isolating the affected area with negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing and disposing of unsalvageable porous materials (like the contaminated carpet and drywall section), and using specialized EPA-approved antimicrobials to eradicate the growth at its root. A crucial final step is identifying and rectifying the source of the moisture—in this case, the AC leak—to prevent recurrence.

Given the extent of hidden damage likely present, a professional assessment is critical. For a certified inspection and remediation quote, please contact our specialists at Saniservice. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
