Can I remove closet mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these black speckles in the corners, and it’s been spreading since the humidity really kicked in last month. All our winter clothes are in there and they’ve started to smell a bit damp and funky. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or is it time to call in one of those professional cleaning companies?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black speckles on an outside wall, spreading with increased humidity, and a musty odor on stored fabrics—this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's climate. The high ambient humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation on cooler surfaces, such as exterior walls. This moisture provides the perfect environment for mold, most likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, though Stachybotrys (true "black mold") is also a possibility.

While a supermarket vinegar solution can kill surface mold on non-porous materials, it is insufficient for your situation. The mold has likely penetrated the porous wall material (plaster/gypsum board) and may be growing within the wall cavity itself. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a health risk.

For a closet on an exterior wall with recurring issues, a DIY approach is not recommended. The root cause must be identified; this could be inadequate insulation, a minor leak, or insufficient ventilation. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, emphasize the importance of proper remediation to prevent health hazards and structural damage.

I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source and assess the extent of the infestation. We then execute a controlled remediation process involving containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence, safeguarding both your property and your health.
