Best dehumidifier for a moldy bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall in our Jumeirah apartment, has developed a few patches of black mold on the leather shoes and bags stored inside. It's been super humid the last few weeks and even though the AC is always on, I guess the air isn't circulating well enough in there. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to put inside the closet to stop this from happening again?

The mold growth you've described in your Jumeirah apartment closet is a classic symptom of the Dubai climate. Despite continuous AC operation, interior closets often suffer from stagnant air, high humidity, and condensation, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold, especially on organic materials like leather.

For a confined space like a closet, I do not recommend a standard electric dehumidifier due to size, heat output, and the risk of over-drying leather. Instead, opt for a high-capacity, reusable moisture absorber. Look for products containing silica gel or calcium chloride crystals, which are highly effective in small, enclosed areas. Brands like Eva-Dry offer renewable units that can be plugged in to reset the moisture-absorbing beads. Place one of these units on the top shelf of the closet.

However, this is a reactive measure. The presence of visible mold signifies an existing issue that requires addressing. Mold spores are already present and the moisture absorber will only prevent further growth, not remediate the current contamination. Leather goods will require professional cleaning to remove the mold and prevent spore dissemination.

For a comprehensive solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians can conduct humidity mapping and air quality testing to identify the precise moisture source and assess the full extent of contamination, ensuring it is safely and permanently resolved in line with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines.
