Can I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots appearing in the corner of our bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on the symptoms you've described—small black spots in a closet on an exterior wall with a persistent damp feeling—this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The high ambient humidity, combined with year-round air conditioning, creates significant temperature differentials between conditioned indoor spaces and the hot exterior walls. This leads to condensation, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive on organic materials like cotton winter clothing and the wall itself.

While a small, isolated patch might be addressed with a DIY approach, your situation warrants caution. Using supermarket bleach is not recommended. Bleach is primarily water, which can feed the mold roots deep within porous surfaces like drywall. It also only bleaches the visible spores on the surface without addressing the root colony, leading to rapid regrowth. Furthermore, bleach fumes can be hazardous in an enclosed space.

For a suspected growth of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion—whether it's condensation, a hidden pipe leak, or capillary rising damp—which must be resolved first. We then perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, as some types, like Stachybotrys (true "black mold"), require more stringent containment and remediation protocols for occupant safety.

Attempting to clean this yourself risks inadequate remediation, spreading spores to other areas of your home, and potential health effects from exposure.
