Is mold causing my kids' persistent cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I'm starting to worry. I just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our Deira apartment and found a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black and green spots. I keep the AC on, but I know it's been more humid than usual lately. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with cleaning products?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the mold growth in your wardrobe and your children's persistent cough are directly related. The fuzzy black and green spots you've described are characteristic of active mold colonies, likely including Cladosporium (black) and Aspergillus or Penicillium (green), all of which are known respiratory irritants and common in the UAE climate.

The persistent humidity we experience in Dubai, even with AC running, creates a perfect environment for mold, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like wardrobes against external walls. Air conditioning can sometimes contribute by creating cold surfaces where condensation forms, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive. When you disturb these colonies, millions of microscopic spores become airborne and are inhaled, which can trigger allergic reactions, asthma, and persistent coughing in sensitive individuals, particularly children.

Attempting to clean this yourself with store-bought products is not advised. Aggressive cleaning can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing the airborne concentration and potentially worsening your children's symptoms. Furthermore, surface cleaning often fails to address the hidden mold within the walls or behind the wardrobe, leading to rapid regrowth.

For the health of your family, a professional inspection is urgent. Our certified inspectors use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and borescopes to see inside cavities. Air and surface sampling can then identify the specific mold types and concentration levels, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol as per UAE standards.
