Is it safe to sleep in my moldy bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little and now I’ve spotted black, fuzzy patches in the corner of the wall behind the wardrobe. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a dry cough for the past couple of weeks and my eyes are always itchy. I’m really worried this mold is the cause. How quickly should I get a professional inspection done, and is it safe for me to sleep in that room until it’s cleaned?

Based on your description of visible black, fuzzy patches and correlating health symptoms like a stuffy head, dry cough, and itchy eyes, it is not safe for you to continue sleeping in that bedroom. Your symptoms are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores, which are being aerosolized by your AC unit and circulated throughout the room.

The black growth is likely a species such as Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both of which are common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant condensation cycles within AC systems. The AC leak you mentioned has created a perfect microenvironment of moisture and cellulose (from the wall and potential dust), allowing the mold to proliferate. Sleeping in this environment for 6-8 hours nightly exposes you to a highly concentrated dose of spores and mycotoxins, exacerbating your allergic reactions and potentially leading to more severe respiratory issues.

You should arrange for a professional inspection immediately. In the UAE, remediation must adhere to strict guidelines, and DIY attempts often disturb the colony, causing a massive release of spores and cross-contamination. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/overt sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible.

For your safety, I recommend relocating until the inspection and remediation are complete. Contact our specialists at Saniservice for an urgent assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can provide a detailed protocol to safely resolve the issue in line with Dubai Municipality standards.
