Can I remove wardrobe mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

Based on the symptoms you describe, particularly the coughing in children, and the visible black mold growth, I strongly advise against a DIY approach. This is a serious situation requiring professional assessment.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a classic sign of condensation mold, a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create cold spots on walls where moisture condenses. While small, superficial mold on non-porous surfaces can sometimes be addressed with a diluted detergent solution (bleach is not recommended as it does not kill the roots and can exacerbate the problem for some individuals), your case has two critical red flags.

First, the presence of health symptoms indicates that the mold is actively producing and releasing spores and mycotoxins into your bedroom's air, affecting the air quality you and your children breathe. Second, the location behind a large piece of furniture suggests a significant moisture issue and potentially extensive hidden growth within the wall cavity itself. Disturbing this mold without proper containment, air scrubbing, and personal protective equipment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, severely worsening the indoor air quality and potentially spreading the contamination to other areas of your home.

In the UAE, professional remediation companies like Saniservice follow strict protocols for assessment and removal. We begin with a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to determine the full extent of the contamination. Remediation involves engineering controls to isolate the area, HEPA filtration to clean the air, and specialized antimicrobial agents to safely and effectively remove the colony at its root.

For the health of your family, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. Please contact our team for a thorough assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
