Can I clean closet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, but I just pulled out some winter clothes and found a bunch of black, fuzzy patches on the back wall and on a few of my jackets. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but the smell is still really strong and it's starting to make me sneeze. Is this something I can properly clean myself with bleach or something stronger, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that requires professional intervention. The presence of a persistent musty odor and the onset of respiratory symptoms like sneezing are strong indicators of an active and potentially hazardous mold colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") or Aspergillus niger.

Attempting to clean this yourself with vinegar or bleach is highly inadvisable. These DIY solutions are ineffective for several reasons. They only remove surface discoloration and do not address the hyphae (root system) penetrating the porous wall material and your clothing. Bleach, in particular, is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold deeper within the structure after the surface chemical evaporates. More critically, disturbing the mold by wiping it releases a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air, significantly increasing your exposure and the risk of the infestation spreading to other areas of your home.

In Dubai's climate, this problem is exacerbated. The constant high humidity and the condensation from a leaking AC unit create a perfect breeding ground for mold. The AC itself can act as a vector, distributing spores throughout the entire living space every time it turns on.

For a case of this magnitude—involving a long-term water source, structural surfaces, and personal belongings—professional remediation is not just recommended, it is essential. Our certified team follows strict protocols based on UAE best practices, which include: containment of the affected area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination, HEPA filtration to remove airborne spores, application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the colony at its roots, and finally, identifying and rectifying the moisture source (the AC leak) to prevent recurrence.
