How to clean mold and fix AC leak in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet, and now I’m seeing these small black speckles starting to form on the wall behind the curtain. It’s been super humid the last few weeks and I’m worried it’s the start of black mold. What’s the best way to clean this small area myself and who should I call to fix the AC leak to stop it from coming back?

Based on your description of a water leak from an AC unit and the subsequent appearance of black speckles on the wall, you are correct to be concerned. This is a classic scenario in Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC operation create ideal conditions for microbial growth, including various types of mold often colloquially referred to as "black mold."

For the small affected area, you can attempt a preliminary clean using a solution of distilled white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the underlying moisture or the root structure of the mold. However, this is only a temporary surface measure. The critical step is addressing the moisture source.

The AC leak is the primary issue. This could be due to a blocked condensate drain line, a damaged drain pan, or insufficient insulation causing condensation. This repair is not a DIY job. You must contact a certified HVAC technician to properly diagnose and fix the leak at its source. They will ensure the condensate is correctly drained away, preventing future water intrusion.

It is important to understand that what you see on the surface may only be a fraction of the growth. Mold can propagate deep into drywall and carpet padding. For a comprehensive assessment and to ensure the environment is safe, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness and conduct air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold species and concentration levels, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol.

To schedule an inspection and get the AC issue resolved permanently, please call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
