Could mold in my cupboard cause my kids' coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I’m starting to worry. I was just putting away winter clothes in the storage cupboard under our stairs in Jumeirah and found a bunch of our jackets and shoes covered in black spots. The recent humidity must have gotten in there. Could this mold be the cause of their coughs, and how do I safely clean everything without making it worse?

Based on my professional experience with mold inspection in Dubai, the presence of black mold in your storage cupboard is a highly probable cause of your children's persistent coughs. The under-stair area is a classic high-risk zone due to its lack of ventilation and significant temperature differentials with the rest of the air-conditioned home. The recent high humidity, combined with potential condensation from your AC system, creates the perfect environment for mold spores to proliferate on organic materials like leather, cotton, and dust.

The link between mold exposure and respiratory issues, particularly in children, is well-documented. Inhalation of mycotoxins and mold spores can cause allergic reactions, asthma-like symptoms, and persistent coughing as the body attempts to clear the airways. In the UAE's climate, where we are constantly moving between humid outdoor air and cold, dry AC interiors, respiratory systems can be more sensitive to such irritants.

I strongly advise against attempting a large-scale cleanup yourself. Disturbing the mold will aerosolize a massive concentration of spores, potentially spreading the contamination throughout your home and exacerbating the health issue. For a confirmed case like this, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air sampling to identify the full extent of the contamination, including hidden growth within walls, which is common in such scenarios.
